Healthy Sweeteners: Which to Choose?

Kudos to you for choosing natural sweeteners over artificial sweeteners that are linked to serious health consequences, including increased risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and possibly even cancer.

Here’s a snapshot of three healthy sugar alternatives to choose when the urge to eat something sweet strikes:

  • Xylitol has some dental health benefits and does not raise blood sugar levels. It is a sugar alcohol, and like other sugar alcohols, it can cause digestive upset.
  • Monk fruit extract is derived from a small green gourd that resembles a melon. It contains zero calories and does not raise blood sugar levels.
