Five Greens to Boost Your Health

You know you are supposed to eat your veggies, but have you ever wondered which ones give you the best bang for your buck? Look no further. Naturopathic doctor Melissa Josselson, N.D., says these five power-packed greens should be on your grocery list every week.

Watercress: Watercress is filled with powerful antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as beta carotene, lutein, manganese and vitamin K. It also contains a compound called phenylethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), which has potent anti-cancer properties. Watercress is a top anti-aging food and it helps to stop free-radical damage in its tracks. 

Spinach: Rich in iron, folate, potassium, and abundant in minerals such as magnesium, spinach is a great veggie for your diet. Folate is important for a healthy cardiovascular system and potassium and magnesium help to keep blood pressure down. When buying this leafy green, choose organic when possible, since spinach is heavily contaminated with pesticides. 

Broccoli: Broccoli is rich in vitamins and minerals that help the body detoxify, keep your heart and eyes healthy, and help prevent cancer. 

Brussel Sprouts: Like broccoli and kale, Brussel sprouts are a cruciferous vegetable. Rich in vitamins and minerals, including  vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, potassium, calcium, and iron, this veggie is a powerhouse in protecting against disease. Brussel sprouts help the body detoxify, prevent cancer, keep our DNA healthy and reduce inflammation.

Kale is high in iron, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C and calcium.  It helps keep bones healthy and prevent osteoporosis.  Sulfur and fiber help your body detoxify.  Kale contains power antioxidants that counteract free-radical damage and also has anti-inflammatory properties.
